First tests of our new photography hides

20.01.2016

We just completed the first tests of our two new photography hides for Eastern Imperial Eagle . Colleagues have been feeding the eagles weekly for a few months now and we had left a photo trap to follow the scene. However we wanted to experience the birds' behavior from first hand and planned a trip to our hides. Situated in Sakar Mountains these two hides are well positions in the realm of the Imperial Eagle. We put the food in the afternoon of the day before the photography session so that birds had enough time to find it. However, this didn't prove the best...

Birding trip to Greece

09.11.2015

In the past weekend November 7-8, 2015 we took 18 students to Evros Delta and Dadia Forest reserve in Northern Greece. The first day was devoted to Evros delta - a vast wetland and Ramsar site, superb for waterfowl and birds of prey. The group visited the information centre where we were met by friendly staff. Shortly after an introduction to the local wildlife we were on the field watching our first Great spotted Eagle from the car park of the wetland. A young bird was circling right over us. Soon we started logging the water birds: Pygmy Cormorants, Dalmatian...

Birdwatching trip around Sofia: Vitosha and Rila monastery

01.11.2015

Bird lovers from 40 countries joined us in two birding trips after an international workshop that BSPB had organized. One of the groups headed to Vitosha mountains and the other to Rila monastery. The main target birds of the first group were the Nutcracker and Crossbill. After an hour drive from Sofia we reached the area. It did not take us long to locate the first birds. They were everywhere. Groups of 4-5 Nutcrackers were flying around with full throats. This is rather typical for autumn when the birds are storing their winter supplies. "I had never seen that many...

Two guests from the Netherlands and the UK did with us two day birding trip around Sofia. Coming for a business trip they had two spare days for birding. They were based in Sofia which allowed us to do two different directions in either of the days. On day 1 we headed West and North West of Sofia. It was a marvelous day with a great diversity of bird species. We collected the guests at 8.00 a.m. from their hotel and headed to our first stop: a wetland which was only an hour drive away. Upon arrival a Kingfisher flew past and 15 Grey Partridges took...
