Pelicans, Eagles and Vultures

€ 950

8-days birding tour

Dalmatian Pelicans, Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagle

About the tour:

These are some of the key species that we shall be aiming at photographing during this 8 days tour in Bulgaria and Northern Greece.
February is the time when Dalmatian are in their super breeding plumage. We shall aim at photographing these majestic birds from the bank of the reservoir and from a boat. The birds come very close so for artistic shots you might want to use wide angle or eve fish eye lens. Depending on the water level we may take a boat and approach the feeding Greater Flamingoes. Pygmy Cormorants are also present and can be photographed.
After filling up the memory cards with pictures of Pelicans we shall head to the Eastern Rhodope where we shall sit in hides aiming at photographing Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagle. They regularly come to feed in front of our photography hides. The results from our work suggest that in 2014 Griffons have kept the positive trend of increase of breeding pairs reaching 70 pairs. Thus the highest number of fledglings was recorded and the chances for photographing the species have also increased.

Level of difficulty: almost no walks or easy ones.
Equipment: We recommend both wide angle and long lenses more than 300 mm. Warm clothes are essential for the long hours in the hides and such are not provided.
Group size: 4 to 6 photographer max

Costs: 950EUR per person (groups size 4-8 persons)

1290EUR per person (group size 2-3 persons)

For Larger groups and individuals: to be agreed

This holiday is on a Full-Board basis.

Day 1
Arrival in Sofia and transfer to Kerkini lake in Northern Greece.
Day 2 and 3
Pelican photography. We shall spend these two days attempting to photograph the Dalmatian Pelican. Often White Pelicans are also present. You are welcome to spend as much time as you like with the object and experiment ideas you may have. Beginner photographers will be given guidance. Upon agreement we can try for other species such as Pygmy Cormorant and Greater Flamingoes which overwinter on the lake.
Day 4
Transfer to the Eastern Rhodopes. It will be a travelling day which will take most of the time.
Day 5, 6 and 7
These three days we shall be sitting in hides trying to photograph Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagle at their feeding grounds. BSPB Birdlife Bulgaria has a long established tradition in feeding these majestic birds. We like to think that due to our efforts the vultures have increased from only a couple of pairs in the beginning of the 80s to 70 breeding pairs in 2014. We shall be rotating in two hides thus presenting a variety of opportunities and settings. To avoid disturbance we shall enter in the hides before sunrise.
Day 8
Departure and travel to Sofia. Please consider when booking your flights that it takes about four hours.
